Brand History
Adolph was founded in Guangzhou in 2010 and began operating as a brand company in 2013 under founder Chen Dian Song. It entered through a neglected gap: foreign brands owned the anti-dandruff and repair claims, domestic players crowded the low end, and almost nobody sold shampoo on scent. Adolph built around an 'essential-oil five-sense fragrance' and 48-hour retention technology, turning shampoo into an emotional product and scaling fast in CS channels with sachets and large formats.
From 2018 the brand ranked first among domestic hair-care players for consecutive years, and says annual retail sales exceeded RMB 10bn in 2018-2020. It then shifted weight to R&D and manufacturing: a 'three parks, one institute, one lab' system, a CNAS-accredited laboratory, a scalp and hair research institute with Jiangnan University, more than 350 granted patents including 18 on tea-seed saponin. Distribution expanded from CS into hypermarkets, e-commerce and livestreaming, with Douyin prioritised after 2023.

Editor's note: Adolph's most instructive move was turning fragrance — a non-functional attribute — into pricing power, rare in Chinese hair care. Its weaknesses are equally clear: revenue depends heavily on one category, premiumisation has yet to produce a second curve, and the 'marketing-heavy, R&D-light' perception needs more transparent financials and patent structure to offset.
