Brand History

Anessa launched in 1992 as Shiseido's suncare line for outdoor and beach use. Its reputation rests on a technical choice: a shake-before-use milk that combines high protection with a texture that does not feel sticky, keeping it on the front shelf in Japan and Southeast Asia's strong-UV markets for decades.

From the 2000s it travelled with Shiseido's Asian expansion into China, where the gold 'little gold bottle' became the default image of Japanese sunscreen — gold cap, shake well, watery milk. The product logic is disciplined: the core formula changes rarely, with iteration on feel, friction resistance, water resistance and reef safety, plus sensitive-skin and kids lines after 2020. As China's suncare market was carved up by localised brands such as Mistine at lower prices, Anessa moved from 'one in every bag' to 'a bit pricier but more reliable' — both its moat and its ceiling.

EDITOR'S NOTE

Editor's note: Anessa is the textbook case of one product defining a whole category's perception, and it is limited by that product. Once Chinese shoppers buy sunscreen by scenario — commute, outdoor, kids, body — one gold bottle cannot answer everything. Shiseido needs a second memorable format, not a second gold bottle.
