Brand History
Avène begins with a spring. The town of Avène in southern France had been known since the 18th century for thermal water used on skin conditions, with dedicated facilities built in 1743. In 1990 Pierre Fabre turned the spring into a brand: sterile filling plus a minimal formula, launching the thermal water spray with an ingredient list as short as water and nitrogen.
Avène then built sensitive skin into a full system: Tolerance (minimal formulas), Cleanance (acne), Cicalfate (repair), across RMB 100-300. Its China path mirrored La Roche-Posay — pharmacy and dermatologist recommendation, cross-border and e-commerce — and it was for years one of the 'big three' pharmacy brands. After 2020, however, domestic brands such as Winona and Dr.Yu re-segmented the market with sharper local insight and lower prices, and although the spray retains very high awareness, it faces a value challenge: why pay over RMB 100 for water? The response has been to weight the portfolio toward repair and suncare with clearer efficacy claims, reducing reliance on one spray.

Three-Year Financials
Neither the brand nor its parent publishes audited annual financials; no estimates are provided.
Brand-level:Avène's revenue is not public. It was one of the early educators of China's sensitive-skin market, with the thermal water spray a long-running leader in cross-border and pharmacy channels at RMB 100-200; in recent years domestic sensitive-skin brands have pressured both share and price.

Editor's note: Avène's most valuable China asset is the collective memory of a first spray, but memory cannot set a price. Once shoppers ask about ingredients and efficacy, a bottle of water argues less well. The real pivot is not charging more for the spray but building full-cycle sensitive-skin management: repair, suncare and after-sun recovery.
