Brand History
Founded in Guangzhou in 2016 and named after a solar term, Guyu built its identity on oriental botanicals plus modern research. The breakthrough was ingredient choice: with brightening dominated by niacinamide and vitamin C, Guyu picked glabridin — costlier, gentler — and built content around 'brightening without building tolerance', sidestepping a head-on fight with international brands.
From 2021 it scaled on Douyin and Xiaohongshu through ingredient explainers and cultural storytelling, with the glabridin serum becoming a hit at RMB 200-300, while 'valley' concept stores reinforced the oriental feel offline. C2CC reported in April 2026 that its parent has entered the IPO process with revenue in the RMB 2-5bn range; as a private company, year-by-year figures are not publicly verifiable.

Observation: Guyu turning glabridin into brand equity is a rare successful case of single-ingredient positioning. The advantage is a clear memory hook; the risk is that once the ingredient is widely copied or a stronger alternative appears, the moat thins quickly. The brightening licence and tolerance data are therefore not just compliance but the key barrier sustaining its premium.
