Brand History
Kérastase was founded in Paris in 1964 as a salon professional brand built on prescriptive haircare: different scalp and hair conditions map to different product combinations, diagnosed and recommended in-salon by the stylist. It entered L'Oréal with the group's consolidation of professional channels and became the Professional Products division's flagship.
In China the brand took an uncompromising premium route: salon, upscale malls and the official Tmall store only, with SKUs at RMB 200-500, and lines such as Chronologiste giving shampoo the ritual feel of fragrance. It occupied a niche almost alone — proving Chinese consumers would pay RMB 400 for a bottle of shampoo while domestic hair care sat at RMB 50. Douyin livestreaming after 2020 brought prestige hair care to the mass audience and tilted the brand's sales mix online.

Editor's note: Kérastase is the pricing anchor of China's prestige hair-care market. Its smartest move was never competing on 'shampoo' price but renaming the product a 'hair prescription'. Scalp care is the real test ahead: domestic brands are educating the market at RMB 99, and Kérastase must prove a RMB 400 scalp regimen is worth four times that.
