Brand History

La Roche-Posay begins with a thermal spring in the small French town of the same name. In 1975 local pharmacist René Levayer turned the selenium-rich water into skincare sold to the town's dermatologists, so the brand carried a doctor-recommended DNA rather than an advertising one.

L'Oréal acquired it in 1989 and placed it in what became the Dermatological Beauty division alongside Vichy and SkinCeuticals. Its China growth came from an ingredient narrative: Cicaplast B5 for repair, Effaclar for acne, Anthelios for sun — three lines mapped to three high-frequency needs, each backed by doctors and pharmacy channels. In China it has long been one of the 'big three' pharmacy brands sharing sensitive-skin shoppers with Winona and Avène. As domestic brands close in with cheaper acquisition and faster drops, its answer is to make dermatologist endorsement harder — clinical data, hospital partnerships, post-procedure scenarios.

EDITOR'S NOTE

Editor's note: La Roche-Posay's China asset is that doctors are willing to recommend it, not the thermal water. That gives it a lower cost of trust than advertising-led brands. The risk: once every brand tells an ingredient and clinical story, dermatologist endorsement becomes scarce — and brands do not control how that scarcity is allocated.
