Brand History
Lancôme was founded in Paris in 1935 by Armand Petitjean with five fragrances, including the forerunner of the Trésor line. Named after the Lancôme château in the Loire Valley, it wrote French elegance into its positioning from day one. L'Oréal acquired the house in 1964, making it the founding stone of the group's prestige beauty business.
In China, Lancôme was among the first imported prestige brands to close the loop across counters, e-commerce and content marketing. Génifique, launched in 2009, became the cash cow, with 'skin-base repair' education building repeat purchase among 25-35 year olds; the Absolue line later pushed the price ceiling above RMB 2,000. Luxe was 35% of L'Oréal's 2025 sales, the largest of its four divisions, with China's recovery explicitly named as a growth source.

Editor's note: Lancôme's China success comes from translating prestige into a repeatable routine — Génifique for acquisition, Absolue for ticket size, the toner for a low-barrier trial. The risk is a broader prestige slowdown and domestic brands building 'dupe' narratives at RMB 500-800. With Kering Beauté folded into Luxe, Lancôme's internal resource ranking will also be reordered.
