Brand History

L'Oréal Paris is the group's founding story: chemist Eugène Schueller started the company in Paris in 1909 with a safe hair dye. As the mass-market brand, L'Oréal Paris became a foundation of what is now the Consumer Products division, known worldwide by the line 'Because you're worth it'.

In China the brand did three things: made mass skincare feel scientific — Revitalift eye cream built RMB 300 price-point credibility on pro-xylane; stocked the entry makeup shelf, with lipsticks and foundations perennially on e-commerce best-seller lists; and turned 'world's No.1 beauty brand' into channel leverage. The 2025 report notes it again consolidated its position as China's No.1 beauty brand as mainland growth accelerated from low- to mid-single digits. It is one of the few importers winning on both prestige (Lancôme) and mass fronts.

EDITOR'S NOTE

Editor's note: L'Oréal Paris may be the best full-price-ladder brand in China — from a RMB 59 cleanser to a RMB 400 eye cream, each rung carrying a science story. Its moat is group-level R&D amortisation: EUR 1.38bn a year of research spending eventually cashes out at mass prices as ingredient words like pro-xylane and hyaluronic acid.
