Brand History
Paula's Choice was founded in Seattle in 1995 by American author Paula Begoun, whose books criticised industry marketing and argued that ingredients, not claims, determine efficacy. The brand turned that philosophy into product: no fragrance, no miracle-ingredient hype, built on proven actives such as salicylic acid and niacinamide. The 2% BHA Liquid remains its global best seller and one of the origin points of China's 'acid peeling' conversation.
Unilever completed its acquisition in 2021, folding the brand into the prestige portfolio of Beauty & Wellbeing. In China the brand grew in lockstep with the ingredient-savvy movement: Tmall and Zhihu content ecosystems amplified word of mouth around BHA liquids and niacinamide serums, lifting the average ticket from RMB 150 basics toward RMB 300+ sets. Unilever's FY2025 turnover was EUR 50.5bn, with Paula's Choice as the clinical-efficacy pillar among its Power Brands.

Editor's note: Paula's Choice rode the fullest wave of ingredient education in China — and is therefore among the first squeezed once domestic clinical brands matured, selling the same salicylic acid at half the price. Its value is shifting from hero SKUs to a dermatological methodology, which domestic players cannot easily copy — provided Unilever keeps investing in the education content.
