Brand History
Pond's dates to 1846, when American pharmacist Theron T. Pond extracted a witch-hazel-based remedy sold as Pond's Extract; it later evolved into cold cream and cleansing products and became one of America's defining mass skincare brands. Unilever brought it in-house through the 1987 Chesebrough-Pond's acquisition and turned it into an affordable, widely distributed mass brand in Asia.
In China the brand was effectively rebuilt. After years of cold cream and whitening ranges, it pivoted to amino-acid cleansing around 2018, relaunching the Rice Cleansing Milk at RMB 30-40 with a rice-extract concept and Japanese-style visuals to reach younger shoppers; it is now the brand's largest SKU in China. Unilever's FY2025 turnover was EUR 50.5bn, and Pond's remains one of its 30 Power Brands — a scale business rather than a premium one.

Editor's note: Pond's is an old brand that has been reinvented. Rather than selling its history in China, it turned the Rice Cleansing Milk into a RMB 39 ingredient story — rare flexibility for a foreign mass brand. It is also the most replaceable: if domestic players push amino-acid cleansers to RMB 29, Pond's has only distribution density and Unilever's supply chain left to play.
