Brand History
shu uemura was founded in Tokyo in 1967 by Shu Uemura, Japan's first genuine makeup-artist celebrity — he had worked on Hollywood sets and brought film makeup technique into everyday looks. The first product was a cleansing oil: in an era of soap and cold cream, he made an oil that dissolves oil, a paradigm shift for the category.
In the 2000s the brand joined L'Oréal and became one of the few houses in Luxe built on professional tools: foundation brush, eyelash curler, calligraphy brow pencil — each turning the tool itself into the product. Its China position has always been peculiar: neither the most expensive nor the trendiest, but treated by makeup artists and enthusiasts as the standard. The challenge is being squeezed from both sides — domestic brands making 'good enough' tools cheaper, and premium houses buying ritual with bigger marketing. Its answer is to lean into Tokyo aesthetics and artist collaborations, converting professionalism into cultural capital.

Editor's note: shu uemura sells the word professional, and professionalism fears dilution — when a RMB 30 brush does 80% of the job, the brand must price the remaining 20%. Its moat is not formula but the muscle memory of working makeup artists: slow to build, very hard to replace.
