Brand History
Spes was founded in Hangzhou in 2020, a textbook brand born on content platforms. Rather than entering the crowded shampoo category, it took two then-empty occasions: pre-wash scalp cleansing with a sea-salt scrub, and emergency oil removal with a dry shampoo spray. Both are inherently demonstrable on short video — pouring salt, massaging, lathering — which made them easy to spread.
Beyond product, its method was to educate 'scalp as skincare': oiliness, dead-cell build-up, clogged follicles, turning washing from a cleaning act into a care act. Douyin was the core channel, supported by a Tmall flagship and offline outlets such as Watsons, with prices at RMB 59-129 — above legacy domestic hair care but below foreign professional lines. As scalp care becomes an industry buzzword, Spes faces both big-group entry and low-price copycats.

Editor's note: Spes's value is not formulation but occasion design — splitting hair washing into before, during and emergency, each able to grow its own SKU. The ceiling is equally clear: once an occasion is validated, big groups cover it with distribution and budget while white-label players cover it with price. Spes must upgrade from an occasion brand to an ingredient brand or struggle to hold a premium.
