Brand History
WaterCode is the hydration brand of Guangzhou's Danzi Group. Danzi was founded in the late 1990s and started in the CS channel — dedicated cosmetics stores — an era when brands relied on distributors, shelf position and shop assistants rather than consumer communication. The job was simply to get stock onto the busiest street in a county town.
WaterCode's positioning was crisp: marine hydration. Blue packaging, water imagery and a price of tens to just over a hundred yuan made it highly competitive in lower-tier markets, and for a time it was one of the leading domestic brands in CS stores. The turn came after 2015 as store traffic fell and e-commerce and social commerce rose. The brand did two things: extend from hydration into suncare, masks and serums, and shift channel weight to Tmall, Douyin and Pinduoduo. That defended scale, but created a new problem: when price is the only difference, it is hard to build recognition beyond lower-tier markets.

Editor's note: WaterCode embodies the fate of a generation of channel brands — hugely successful in the shelf era, inarticulate in the content era. The opportunity is not gone: lower-tier demand for cheap, reliable hydration remains large. The question is how to be rediscovered on a phone screen.
