Brand History
Estée Lauder started in New York in 1946 with four products: a cleansing oil, a lotion, a cream and an essence. Her innovation was not formula but selling — in-store demonstrations, free trials, turning skincare purchase into a service ritual, a practice that became the industry standard for prestige beauty. From the 1960s the group built a portfolio through launches and acquisitions: Clinique, Origins, La Mer, MAC, Jo Malone.
Advanced Night Repair, launched in 1982, helped define the serum category globally and remains the group's most dependable cash flow. China became the growth engine from the 1990s across department stores, travel retail and e-commerce, and was briefly the group's second-largest market in FY2021. But FY2023 to FY2025 brought three consecutive years of declining net sales and a net loss of USD 1.133bn in FY2025, prompting the 'Beauty Reimagined' strategy and the largest organisational reset in a decade. Mainland China net sales were USD 2.741bn in FY2025, down 6%, with travel retail the main drag.

Brand-level:The Estée Lauder brand is not reported separately but anchors the group's skincare segment. Mainland China net sales were USD 2.741bn in FY2025, down 6%, with the group attributing part of the decline to a sharp fall in Asian travel retail, especially Hainan.

Editor's note: Estée Lauder's problem is that the 'prestige funded by travel retail' model stopped working. ANR still performs, but with the price anchor moving from duty-free back to counters and e-commerce, the brand must re-earn its price. The reset addresses cost and organisation; the real test is whether China gets a second story at ANR's level.
