Brand History
Origins was created by Estée Lauder in 1990 — founded by Leonard Lauder with partners — as a botanical skincare brand under the banner 'natural, backed by science'. It started with charcoal masks and plant oils, and its mushroom range built on Eastern ingredients (reishi, cordyceps) became the defining asset; the Mega-Mushroom toner is nicknamed a 'rescue tonic' in Chinese beauty communities.
In China Origins sits between mass and prestige: RMB 250-500 prices, strong botanical visuals, parallel counters and e-commerce. Three SKUs carry traffic — the mushroom toner, clay mask and caffeine eye cream. With the group under pressure (FY2025 net sales USD 14.33bn, a USD 1.13bn net loss), Origins' natural narrative is the entry brand for younger shoppers, though it must keep defending traffic against domestic botanical brands.

Editor's note: Origins holds a rarely copied card — the 'Eastern ingredients, Western lab' narrative, scarce among foreign brands. A decade of social buzz around the toner proves the hero SKU is strong, yet the brand never built a second pillar. Expanding the mushroom family is more realistic for Origins than inventing a new category.
