Brand History

SK-II began at a Japanese sake brewery, where researchers traced the remarkably soft hands of veteran brewers to a yeast fermentation by-product, Pitera. In 1980 the brand launched its Facial Treatment Essence in Japan — one hero liquid, minimal routine — and has spent four decades refining packaging and concentration rather than rewriting the story.

In 1991 SK-II joined P&G along with Max Factor, becoming the group's prestige skincare anchor in Asia. Its China playbook was textbook: duty-free and department-store counters set the price anchor, word of mouth around the essence spilled into e-commerce, and sales passed USD 1bn in 2012. After 2020 it was squeezed by domestic clinical brands and Japanese peers; China fell 34% in Q4 2023 and the brand became a case study in prestige stalling. From H2 2025 a new cream and gift sets restored growth, but China dependency remains its biggest variable.

EDITOR'S NOTE

Editor's note: SK-II is the purest single-hero structure in Chinese prestige — one essence carries most of the brand equity. That makes it unforgettable and fragile: any price slippage damages everything. The 2023 decline was not product failure but a missing reason to be expensive; the 2025 rebound was that reason being told clearly again.
